Another Option for People with Cataracts

Did you know cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgery in all of medicine?  In fact, most Americans will need it in their lifetime.  My grandmother actually had cataract surgery in both eyes a few months ago.  I teamed up with Dr. Alice Epitropoulos, the founder of the Refactive Center of Ohio to learn more about crystalens, another option for patients.  Cataracts cloud vision and surgery can help by replacing the clouded lens with an artificial one.  But cataract surgery has gotten even more advanced, that’s where crystalens comes into play.  Dr. Epitropoulos says the FDA approved lens has hinges so the optic nerve can move back forth, which allows patients to see close up and far away.  Almost 85 percent of patients don’t ever need glasses again.  That’s a big difference compared to the regular cataract surgery where patients need some type of glasses.  Now insurance companies pay for cataract surgery but won’t pay for the upgrade in technology.  The price ranges from 1,900 to 2,500 hundred per eye.  It’s important to note, the risks are the same as with intraocular lenses.
