WE HAVE WORDS!!!
I don’t know if it was as much excitement as it was relief. I think we all feel a sense of both today.
Brady’s team meeting was this morning—his therapists, Elizabeth from Children’s—the whole gang in our basement going over Brady’s plan for the week. Brady has been much more talkative lately—-more syllables and blabbering. He’s also been a bit more tempermental—taking some time to calm down when he gets upset. So he’s downstairs with the ladies—I’d just come back from a morning run. I go downstairs to hear that brady used his PECS book (pictures of items he normally uses) to request the TV remote. He wanted to check out som Dora, I guess. Anyway, he goes to give Sarah the PEC but she’s on the phone at the time. Without his mommy’s full attention, Brady resorts to an unusual approach.
“TV” he says. The room erupts… and he says again “TV…TV.“
He had clearly made the connection, and for the first time since his diagnosis used a real word in connection to something he needed.
Minutes later, it happened again. Naturally, I was upstairs again. :(
I had just fed Brady his lunch and sent him back downstairs. I’m cleaning up when I hear a medley of joyful screams. “Oh my God, Way to go Brady!!“ I hear. I run back downstairs. “What happened?“ I say…
Same story.. Brady goes to his PECS book, and picks a banana. He goes to Sarah and says “Banana” as he hands her the PEC. A 3-syllable word! He knew exactly what he wanted—so Meredith, his therapist, comes sprinting upstairs to get a banana and take it to him. He only ate about two bites, but who cares!!!
This was a HUGE day for Brady. But we’re well-versed enough to know that this could just be one of those lucky days. Things go well… he says a couple words here and there. But I know we’re all encouraged…
