Elaborating With Ellie

Finding child care….what now?

I went through “the search” a few months ago….the search for child care for my daughter.  My husband and I visited daycare centers, talked with child care providers who work out of their own homes, and researched nannies.  What we learned is that it can be a struggle!  It is not easy to find the right “fit.“  There are so many factors to consider, such as location, hours, educational programs, cost and most importantly who will be caring for your child.  There is nothing more important than the health and safety of your child.

I also came across a fabulous resource in our community that I think every parent should know about and take advantage of when searching for child care.  The organization is called Action for Children.  It is a private, not-for-profit source for child care and early learning services in Central Ohio.  I called them after I had hit some roadblocks in my search.  I wish I had called them first, because they were able to walk me through what’s available and give me a long list of options.  Of course, it was up to me to visit each place and determine if I thought it would be the right fit for my daughter, but the resources they have are wonderful.  They also have some great parenting programs and information, too.  Plus—they are just all around nice people.  :)  My husband and I are now very happy with our child care choice, but I know, it’s not an easy search folks.

I’d love to hear from you.  Do any of you parents out there have good advice on searching for quality child care?

I relied pretty heavily on the ODJFS website.  I was able to look at inspection records, violations, and get a sense of each center I was considering.  But, I agree, Action for Children was a great resource!

Subha,
I agree.  The ODJFS website was very helpful, too.  You can check out each inspection report for all daycares in Ohio—great resource everyone!

Hi Ellie..
Im not the one searching for child care, but Im always the nanny looking for the perfect family. I am fortunate now to be with a great family but its very hard to find the right fit.
It is a challenge to find the resources to look for a family as it is when a family is trying to find child care for their child.
Im glad you found the right fit for your little one though!

Hi Missy,
It is all about finding the right fit isn’t it?  Cost, location, convienience are all important factors, but if you aren’t comfortable with who you are leaving your child with, it won’t work.  I’m glad you are happy with your “family.“  I know some nannies and when you find the right family you stick with them for years.  Best of luck to you and stop by anytime.  Since you are a “pro” with kids we could use your thoughts here!

I too tried Action for Children but my husband and I both work 2nd shift so we weren’t really able to find anyone. It’s great that so many people have found such great child care with them.
