Elaborating With Ellie

Happy Father’s Day!

UPDATE:  We had a great Father’s Day.  How about you?  Caroline, Matt and I headed for the Columbus Zoo and had a wonderful time together as a family.  No gifts needed, I guess. :)  Caroline loved the zoo, and it was so fun to see her get excited seeing all the animals.  There were plenty of families there on Sunday, and it was just nice to see everyone enjoying themselves.  We love Daddy!

Poor Dad.  So often he gets forgotten.  Mother’s day tends to be a little bigger deal at our house than father’s day.  Lucky for me, but not so lucky for my husband.  Last year, Caroline and I managed to come up with a decent gift for my husband’s first father’s day.  We made him a pretty snazzy photo album filled with pictures from Caroline’s first year.  It was accompanied with some “daddy and me” books that Caroline and her dad can read together.  While I liked the gift, we didn’t exactly “hit it out of the ballpark.“  Believe me, this year isn’t going to be any better.  Sorry honey.  I haven’t even started thinking about the gift.

But Caroline and I are resourceful gals, so we’ll come up with something, that will likely involve food.  I did, however, pull up some pictures of Caroline in “sports wear.“  She’s sporting some Indians, Bengals, and Buckeye gear.  I thought that might help put me in a father’s day mood.  If anyone else is scrambling for a gift for dad this year, I asked around the newsroom to see what some of the NBC 4 Dads said were their favorite father’s day gifts and here’s what they came up…some great ideas!

Cabot Rea— Cabot sang with his son and two daughters in church on father’s day.  It was a song about a father’s love for his children.  How cool is that?

Phil Schneid—Phil got some handmade pottery from his children.  He didn’t go into details as he flew through the newsroom, but he loved it.

Stan Sanders—Stan’s daughters took him on a picnic.  That’s a great idea!

Ryan Squire—Ryan went on a beach vacation with his family.  He said it was awesome because it was time alone with the family—no work, no demands.  You need another vacation Ryan!

Jason Mays—At first Jason said “sleep,“ but then he said his favorite gift was a picture of him with his daughter in the back yard.

Chris Booker—Chris got a card from his first born on his first father’s day.  That’s easy and quite personal, too.

Jerod Smalley—Jerod’s favorite father’s day gift was finding out he was going to be a dad—again!  That was last year and we’ll see what this year brings.

Enjoy the weekend!  What’s the best father’s day gift you or your children have ever given dad?

Hmmm.  I can’t say I’m the greatest when it comes to Father’s Day gift ideas.  But here’s what I got so far…

We make Father’s Day into Father’s Day *Weekend* at our house.  All weekend long dad gets to choose what we have for meals, have total control of the radio in the car, take a big fat nap, and basically do whatever he’d like to do.

This morning, he went to the shooting range with his dad.  I wanted to do something to surprise him.  So while he was gone, I secretly purchased a couple of movie tickets to a movie he had been wanting to see and dropped all of the kids off with Grandma.  We adore our children!  But let’s face it…sometimes the best gift for dad is a little undivided attention from mom!  :)

My husband is really hard to buy for, he is very picky, and just buys things he wants, never makes mention of them, so I can try before he gets it!
So this year, I was randomly walking through a thrift store, actually looking for pots for my houseplants, and stumbled upon “Popeye” based on the live action movie, from 1981, starring Robin Williams.  My husband is very anti-cartoons and has mentioned how much he likes that movie, and we have not yet found it on DVD, so this was the next best thing.  He had no clue it was coming and it was something he could read and share with Jr.

It was perfect!  and, $1.50, but actually, if I was a VISA commercial, it would have been PRICELESS.

This year, I decided to act on an idea I saw in a magazine.  I put together a little scavenger hunt for my husband (narrated from our son’s perspective)and it ended up with us going to breakfast.  He also wanted to watch the US Open, so I “allowed” that. :)
