Elaborating With Ellie

In The Dark

Nope—no power. I think we’re on Day 3 now. I’ve never before cared so much about what time the sun sets. 7:39 last night!  We’re not alone. There are still hundreds of thousands of people in Central Ohio without power after the windstorm nearly blew us all away. Luckily we didn’t have any damage to our home, but our neighborhood is a mess with trees down everywhere. Things are getting cleaned up, and now we’re just waiting for the power to come back on.  Please let today be the day!  :)

How are we getting by.  Not bad.  Not bad at all.  Last night my husband and I grab a bottle of wine and sit down by candlelight for a nice, long chat. Good stuff. Also—no tv to distract us while we are playing with our daughter. Yes, it’s inconvenient to lose power, but the end of the world it is not. We shall survive and are finding ways to make do and actually enjoy the quiet, for once. That’s the story for us at least.  I really have to feel for those with health problems who NEED electricity.  It’s a safety issue for them, and a good reminder for all of us to check on our friends and neighbors.  Oh—and just to mention…I have a sweet neighbor, who also happens to own a generator and spent yesterday walking around the neighborhood with fresh coffee for everyone. Thanks Katie!

How are you all doing? Do you have power?

Take care,

Ellie

No power at all in my neighborhood. Trees fell on houses and cars and yards. I also noticed houses with siding and shingles torn up. I emptied the fridge this morning, and the freezer in the kitchen will have to go today (48 hours rule). Such a sad waste to lose the food!

We were driving home on I-71 from Akron during the wind. It was terrible driving- road signs and orange barrels flying around. We nearly ran out of gas, as due to fighting the wind our mileage was terrible. We got off at the Sunbury exit to get gas, and there was none.

My mom had some major foot/ankle surgery last Thursday. She can only get ice through a electronic tube that goes into the cast. We are hoping by tonight her power is back on. It made me and my husband really think over the last few days though, The elderly people how do they all get by? We have made sure a neighbor of my moms gets food, water etc. She can no longer drive.  We also said at least we arent in Texas. Yeah a little inconveniance but at least we have our homes ( at least most of us)we sure could have it worse.

On the kid front, as most of you know Im a nanny. They didnt have power in Arlington today. So I brought some play mats and we did playdoh out side. It was alot of fun. Not something we do inside too often but the mess was gone in a instant when we did it outside!

Sorry to hear about everyone without power.  We were without power here in London for some time, but the good folks at Ohio Edision got us turned back on within about 5 hours so no complaints here.  It was strange because there were about 5 homes in our neighborhood that had power and the rest of the 50 homes did not.  It was kinda scarey and it looked like a ghost town.  We had quite a bit of damage here in London.  Homes were badly damaged, trees were down everywhere….literally uprooted at the base and items of debris were flying about.  Something I have never seen in my 33 years of living.  Well, here is to all of you without power - Good Luck and I hope it comes back on soon : )

we lost power for 11 hours.  at first it was kind of “fun”.  we had a bunch of friends and family over for a cookout and dinner by candlelight.  there was no t.v. or anything to distract us…
however, i did not sleep at all sunday night until it came back on at 3am.  i was so worried about our food.  we have an additional freezer and refrigerator in the garage and i had just stocked up.  little did i realize how bad it could really have been!  i feel so bad for everyone dealing with this…

We live in Powell and were without power for 24 hours.  Our kids ages 3 and 6 thought the whole wind-storm was cool.  After the storm, we walked around the neighborhood and I loved seeing everyone out and helping each other.  There were chain saws cutting up blown down trees, people on roofs hammering down shingles, and lots and lots of neighbors talking to each other.  The camaraderie after something like this is amazing.

Later that night, after a long bedtime story by candlelight, our whole family slept in our bed.  The kids loved it!

My power came back at 9pm Wednesday. There are downed poles in the area, and I heard it may go off again so they can repair or replace the poles (by Northland High School).

Mine was out for a week!

At least I saved a lot on my electric bill, right?

Take care!
