Organizing the Kitchen
Our kitchens are no longer just for cooking. In fact, I have friends who claim they never cook in their kitchens (giggle). It’s more of a “drop zone” for take-out. I love a great kitchen with snazzy gadgets and some great wines chilling, just waiting for company to come over. My husband and I have been out of our home while we renovate, and I can’t wait to get in my kitchen and get cooking again! It’s fun to have my family chatting in the kitchen while we cook dinner together. I’ve come to realize that how the kitchen is organized can determine whether you love the space, hate it, or just tolerate it. We should LOVE our kitchens, and professional organizer Birdie Brennan is great at making it all come together with ease.
Today at NBC 4 at 5, Birdie helps whip our kitchens into shape. Here are a few of her tips:
1.) De-clutter. Toss, donate or recycle what you don’t need. Pull everything out of a cupboard, figure out what you really want to keep, and how much space it takes up.
2.) Group like items together. For example, in the utensil drawer, group grilling items together, put spatulas in one spot, and measuring cups and spoons for baking together.
3.) Streamline your Space. Birdie says, “You want to place your things close to where you use them. The most often used things are dishes and silverware, so I’ve got my silverware right next to the dishwasher, right next to the table.“ It makes sense, and makes it easy, too.
4.) Set up your pantry like a store. Put paper products together, pasta and rice in one spot, and canned goods together. You want to avoid just shoving stuff in the pantry when you get home from the store. It does you no good when you can’t find anything come dinner time.
5.) Use labels either on containers or the shelf, whatever works for your family. “Sometimes labels on the shelf are more important than labels on containers, so people know where to put them back,“ said Birdie.
