Dishin' On Daytime

Dishin’ On Daytime

I’m sure many of you have worked with young people who are fresh faced and eager to learn your business and gain insight to the work world.  We call them interns…or more bluntly…cheap labor!  It is a two way street.  We get these college kids who are energetic and fill the holes in our employee roster, while they gain valuable information about their upcoming career.  I do make it a point to try my best to counsel these students and be a mentor as they decide the next step in their lives. But sometimes the work day does get in the way and I’m not sure how much teaching I’m doing!  I am mindful though about the experience for these young people so I do try to hand out advice and use the teachable moments.  Whenever I feel like I don’t have time to deal with an intern, I remember my intern experiences and know that these opportunities were truly the start of my career and where I really learned the rules of the broadcast business.  This is a reminder to you…and to me…to take time to teach.  Your influence may seem minimal but will have a lasting effect on a young career.
