When I was growing up, Beverly Hills 90210 was the hot show, and I remember girls in my school lining up at opposite ends of the room, taking sides.  There was team Jason Priestley VS team Luke Perry.  In the new movie New Moon, teenyboppers once again have to make the choice, team Edward VS Team Jacob.  After about an hour of New Moon, I was on team get me the heck out of here, this movie is going nowhere, then they hooked me a bit.
The film continues the saga of human Bella (Kristen Stewart) and her infatuation with vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson) and the constant struggle between love and just how good Bella’s blood would taste!  Gross I know, but you have to know the series to understand just what is going on here.  You wouldn’t get a clear vision of that just by watching the first hour or so of this film.  The writing is just about as dead as some of the characters, in fact there are scenes where the actors just stare at each other and breathe.  Edward spends most of the movie showing you that the only thing that he is really afraid of, besides a stake in the heart, is eye contact.  Why won’t he ever look at the woman that he loves??  The conversations are about as shallow as Mirror Lake (Columbus shout out, just enter your own pond here) after a drought, and there is so much teen angst, you would think these kids never got out into the sun… I guess that is partially true.
After figuring out that these 2 star crossed loves can never be together, (he’s a vampire for Pete’s sake) there has to be a reason for Bella to go on right?  Well that is where Jake comes in.  A hulking friend to Bella who has decided that while Edward focused on being pale and elusive, he would spend some time in the gym.  And be assured, every chance he has to show you his new body, HE DOES!  Bella bumps her head, he takes his shirt off.  He goes out for a run, he takes his shift off.  But there is something different about Jacob.  Besides being anti-shirt, he is also hairy.  And I don’t mean Borat hairy, this guy is a werewolf!  Able to change and pounce at a moment’s notice, and one of the only things that actually hunt down Vampires.  He also presents a bit of a danger for young Bella (talk about a girl who always seems to pick the wrong type of guy!)
There are some really good scenes throughout, they usually don’t involve dialogue.  For instance, when Bella is celebrating her birthday with Vampires, she cuts herself.  No big deal right?  Well, it is something you really don’t want to do around blood suckers, and even friends can’t seem to contain themselves.  But Edward won’t let the vultures after Bella, throwing them around until she can get stitched up.  Cool special effects, nice action sequences.  Later, Bella has to try and save her deadbeat boyfriend after he decides living, or whatever he is doing, isn’t worth it.  She arrives to save him just in the nick of time, but runs into the Volturi.  Basically, a group of Vampires a bit higher in the food chain than most.  They decide they can’t have the live bait around, and once again Edward defends Bella’s honor.  Again, great action, and finally the battle of Vampires started to peak my interest.  Mix that with the battle between the werewolves and Vampires and I was actually very interested.  It just came too late in the game for me.  I had already mentally checked out.
This movie already has a built in audience, it is going to bring in so much money it will make Harry Potter puke!  But it brings me back to my comment from the latest in that chapter, will fans go and say they loved it because it was good, or because they have to say its good to justify seeing the next one, which is coming!  I think for fans of the series, it’s a no-brainer.  For those who are somewhat intrested in seeing what everyone else is talking about, I would say despite a few moments where you will laugh out loud and the ridiculousness of it all, it’s still worth a trip over the new moon!
