The Dog Days of Summer

Pogonip, Quox & MaugrimJust as a matter of perspective… these are the puppies in my world.  Dan snapped this photo Saturday morning while “the kids” were begging to come back inside.

Our family is a gold-star example of how shelters, fosters and “Mingle With Our Mutts” (http://www.minglewithourmutts.org) really do work.

Pogonip is a terrier-beagle mix of some kind. She showed up on NBC 4 in 2003 as a tiny, little puppy.  She and three sisters were found in a bag in the Wayne National Forest then turned over to Columbus Dog Connection (http://www.columbusdogconnection.com) to be adopted to good homes.  Pogonip was the spokesdog for that week’s “Mingle With Our Mutts” segment.  And it was love at first sight.

Quox is a lab-retriever mix of some kind. In 2004, a Franklin County Animal Warden found him wandering along Ebright Road, near SR 33 on the southeastern side of the county.  He was either lost or abandoned near the highway.  He, too, was a spokesdog for a “Mingle” segment on NBC 4 and ended up coming home with me.

Maugrim is another mix of some kind.  He’s actually my mom’s dog.  We’re just dogsitting for a few days… but he likes to play with Quox and Pogonip anyway.  His brother was a spokesdog for “Mingle” in 2006.  My mother fell in love with the dog and drove all the way to Columbus to go to the Franklin County Animal Shelter (http://www.franklincountydogs.com).  The puppy she had seen on TV was already adopted out (how’s THAT for fast!?) but there were a bunch of puppies from the same litter.  She found Maugrim and they bonded instantly.

We also have a Siamese cat named Stewie. (Yes, he’s named after our favorite character on “Family Guy.“)  Thankfully, he thinks he’s a dog; always wanting attention from the humans.  He’s nearly always under foot or keeping an eye on what we’re doing.  He puts up with the dogs.  Interestingly, he’s actually become the alpha in the animal troop!

The picture of Pogonip, Quox and Maugrim waiting to come in is wonderful. They all look adorable! Stewie, the Siamese cat, sounds very nice too.

I’m glad to see that these dogs who were in shelters all managed to find a good, loving home. I had several cats and a dog growing up and they all came from shelters or friends. I loved all of them deeply their whole lives.

I’m glad to hear that programs like “Mingle with Our Mutts” can place pets with good, loving families.
