Clinton Campaign Keeps Asking Me For Money
Long before the primary campaign rolled through Ohio I made sure that I was on the email lists for the major presidential campaigns. Seven weeks after the campaign offices closed here in Columbus I am still getting flooded with emails from Team Obama, Team Clinton, and Team McCain.
McCain’s press people are the most obsessive about updating journalists on every development (I’ve received 18 emails from Team McCain over the last 36 hours. I think someone is jealous for attention). I can tell you where each candidate will be each day and the next. I know what they think about the major issue of the day via their carefully worded remarks, likely written by someone else and glanced at between campaign speeches by the candidates themselves. And I know that Hillary Clinton wants my money. Bill Clinton wants my money. Terry McAuliffe wants my money.
Unlike the other campaigns, Team Clinton has converted this reporter’s email address from the media list, to the ‘Let’s hit him up for money list.’ And so now I am asked at least once a week to give. $5, $10, whatever. Of course, you can imagine that anyone who does give money is going to get an email immediately afterward asking that they give more. One email asked me to help volunteer by working the phone banks.
I find it funny that Team Clinton has taken this approach to solicit journalists who, as a matter of ethics, refrain from actively supporting any candidacy or party, and work to overcome personal biases in order to achieve balanced coverage. I can unsubscribe at any time, but the messages are entertaining enough and you never know if you’ll find a good story in one of them...or the inspiration for a blog post.
Here are some examples.

Dear Patrick,
This campaign is your campaign, and the victory we celebrated last night is your victory.
Now, thanks to you, the tide is turning in this race. We never stopped believing in one another, never doubted that we could count on each other. You didn’t quit, and when I’m president, I promise I won’t quit on you.
Now with the next critical contests right around the corner, we need your immediate help to build on the hard-earned momentum of our Pennsylvania victory and continue our success all the way to the nomination.
Contribute today to help carry our momentum to Indiana, North Carolina, West Virginia, and beyond.
Even though the Obama campaign went for broke trying to knock us out of the race, the people of Pennsylvania had other ideas.
We connected with Pennsylvania families who know they need a strong leader who’s on their side to turn around the battered Bush economy and end President Bush’s disastrous war in Iraq. And as this redefined contest moves across the country, we’ll keep connecting.
I’m in this race to fight for you. And you know you can count on me to keep fighting for you every day. And as long as we keep working together, we’ll wrest control of the White House from the Republicans and defeat John McCain. I’m going to continue to rely on your heart and your spirit every step of the way.
Contribute now, and together, we can carry our winning message to victory.
Thanks to you, we’re on a roll. And with your immediate help, we’ll keep moving forward until we’ve won the Democratic nomination, won the November election, and earned the opportunity to lead America in a new, more promising direction.
Thanks so much for believing in me and believing in how much we can accomplish if we keep pulling together.
Sincerely,
Hillary Rodham Clinton

Folks, I’ve never seen anything like it—thanks to you we are breaking every record we’ve ever had. The number of people coming on our website and supporting Hillary is nothing short of incredible. More than 50,000 people have contributed to the campaign for the very first time in the last 24 hours alone.
If you haven’t gone to the website today and made a contribution, now’s the time to join the wave of grassroots support. And if you have contributed, send this message to your friends and tell them to join you.

Dear Patrick,
Hillary needs your help. With less than 24 hours left until the Pennsylvania primary and races across the country following soon after, it’s an all-hands-on deck moment for our campaign.
We need as many volunteers as we can get on the phones calling voters in Pennsylvania and other upcoming primary states. The calls you make are critical to our success tomorrow in this historic campaign. I can’t emphasize enough what a difference it makes to have Hillary’s best supporters—people just like you—making calls and speaking directly with voters. To put it as simply as I can, more calls equal more votes.
Even if you can only spare a couple of hours, you can have a big impact. The Pennsylvania primary is almost upon us, and Hillary needs you.
Sign up for a shift to make calls and help Hillary win.
I really appreciate everything that our volunteers do to help Hillary and the campaign. Thank you so much for caring about the future of our country.
Sincerely,
Maggie Williams
Campaign Manager

Dear Patrick,
I’m going to give you the same advice I give to Hillary: block out the distractions—the skeptics, the media coverage, the beltway chatter—and keep your eyes on the prize.
With the news media constantly poring over the minutiae of the campaign, I make sure Hillary never forgets to stay focused on what matters: telling every last American about her vision, her experience, and her commitment to bringing real change to people’s lives.
Let the press worry about the shifting polls and the daily back-and-forth. As long as Hillary stands up for the values we share—and as long as you stand up for her—she’s going to win this race.
It’s a tight race, whether you’re counting delegates or total votes, the kind where one big victory can shift the momentum. We’ve got a race like that coming up in Pennsylvania in just six days, and your immediate action will make a difference.
Contribute now to help Hillary win big in Pennsylvania on Tuesday.
We know Senator Obama’s strategy: spend, spend, and spend some more.
His campaign is hoping their spending is enough to win the primary and bring this race to a close. But they weren’t counting on the incredible connection Hillary has made with Pennsylvanians or the remarkable support you have shown her.
Tonight, Hillary will share the stage with Senator Obama in a debate, and Pennsylvania voters will consider their final decisions over the next six critical days.
If you contribute to Hillary’s campaign today, you can be assured of two things: it will go right back out the door to help her win, and it will make a difference in this close race.
Contribute today for our Pennsylvania victory.
Don’t forget: stay focused on what’s important, and we’ll celebrate victory together.
Thank you,
Bill Clinton
