Basketball Bucks: Baby Steps
Before fans get too excited, consider the opposition. But still… Seven straight wins for the Basketball Bucks is a major sign of improvement.
Their talent as individuals has never been questioned, but the freshmen’s ability to play as a unit has been fleeting, especially against premiere competition. That problem is starting to erode, thanks to Thad Matta’s relentless approach.
There’s no doubt that Kosta Koufos has All-American talent—a 7-footer with the shooting skill of a guard. But you notice how he goes quiet in some games and struggles on the defensive end? It doesn’t mean he’s lazy or doesn’t want to be great, but right now he’s still learning how to find his shot against better defenders.
And Evan Turner has grown up mightily over the past month, making some assertive offensive plays. It’s been fueled by great commitment on defense.
Jon Diebler’s still searching for his consistent shooting stroke. Dallas Lauderdale’s learning to use his bulky body. Eric Wallace is starting to earn more minutes as an athletic threat.
Overall, the class is not as strong as people thought it might be—at least right now. They’re winning games because of coaching and defensive commitment. Having Jamar Butler as an experienced, senior point guard helps carry the younger folks along when they struggle.
If I’m another Big Ten team, I’d want to play OSU right now. Because in a month, the Bucks could be a title contender for the 3rd straight year.
