ET To Philly ... A Perfect Marriage
Philly fans are known for some bad behavior. Booing Santa Claus. Cheering when Michael Irvin was seriously injured at the Vet. And of course, the teenage Phillies fan who projectile vomited on another fan on purpose earlier this year.
Yup… Philadelphia Freedom. They love freedom of speech.
But Turner may make some of those hard-to-please fans grin, if not flat-out smile. Philadelphia brass says they were impressed with Evan Turner’s “professionalism” in visits and workouts. Perhaps ET’s learning curve may prove a little shorter than most guys, which is why he’s a great pick for the Sixers. They need a guy who can come in and play today—-certainly Evan can, especially since he’s a veteran compared to the one-and-done kids making up most of the draft these days.
The best comparison of Turner to a current NBA player might be Portland’s Brandon Roy. Roy’s an unheralded yet uber-talented scorer for the Blazers, perhaps the least well-known All-Star in recent history. But Turner found his best success this past season running the offense and creating with the ball at the point (Roy’s no point guard). The Sixers feature Jrue Holliday at point guard but they might call on Turner to run the offense some, if not a majority of the time. But Philly is not lost for talent. Elton Brand, Andre Iguodala are ouststanding talents. And don’t forget former OSU Head Coach Randy Ayers is still an assistant there—that can’t hurt Evan’s chances.
