Deep Thoughts

FFN Week #1… What went down…

Well our first Football Friday Nite show of the year went, as I like to say, aaight.  We some problems working with some new camera setups—I couldn’t tell which camera I was actually on!  I’m just looking around the studio hoping I find it… anyway—we’ll have that fixed next week.  We ended up shooting 13 games, which is a modern-day record for FFN!  Here’s my thoughts on what went down…

I personally saw two impressive teams, Pickerington Central and Dublin Scioto… here’s what I saw from both.  PCHS-Outstanding work defensively—big play defensive backs, including future Buckeye Jamie Wood (2 INT’s, 1 for TD) support a stout 2nd level, including linebacker—also future Buck—-Zach Boren. The offense is a work in progress, but they have a couple crucial elements—-a QB with quickness and a real kicker.
And Scioto’s got more than just Bradley McDougald—yet another future Buckeye.  Their offense features of a group of tall, fast receivers.  Grove City is a team and school with miles of progress to make, so it’s tough to say Scioto is really that good—-but they’ll get tested plenty this year.

Other impressive clubs from opening night:  We got an incredibly insulting and rude email from a Jonathan Alder fan, but he made one good point.  The Pioneers should have been included in our FFN preseason kickoff show because of their recent winning tradition.  The Pioneers started their season with a comfy with over Monroe… they’ll certainly be a factor in ‘08.  Look, we can’t cover every school, we try, but we can’t!  We do our best, and certainly Alder will get its due… rude emails from dorks living in their parents’ basements forgiven.

I was surprised with Brookhaven’s win over Chillicothe, not because I didn’t think the Haven would be that good this season, but that Chillicothe was expected to be much better. And.. I dig those new unis at the Haven!

Did anybody else do a doubletake when they saw the Logan-Lancaster score???  I mean I knew Logan would come out inspired, opening its new stadium and all, but dude, what happened to the Gales?  Last year was not great for Lancaster, and it’s not a stronng start this season.

Same story in the Westerville North-New Albany game. I expected much more from the Eagles, and I know coach Mark Mueller did.

Nice comeback win by Coffman over Liberty…I’m thinking the Rocks could be a factor by season’s end once they get more experience.

Brian White from Hilliard Davidson can poor mouth his team like few coaches I know—Lou Holtz-esque!  But if you ask me who the best coach in Central Ohio is, I’d have a really hard time saying it’s not White. He’s a phenomenal leader and motivator, and he does it every year with undersized kids with oversized pride.  They pounded on Westerville South Friday to set the tone for their season.

Watch Football Friday Nite next week for Chapter 2 of this season—-and we’lll totally get that camera thing worked out!

No comments for you.

Jrod,I didnt thimk I was rude at all toward you or FFN, but if you go back and watch your show there were plenty of opportunities to throw a mention in there, even in your blog on teams to watch, nothing.  The program deserves a little respect, because we respect you.

Oh, and if your going to insult somebody, at least be original.  You listen to, too much Herd.  Besides why not let your parents pay the bills?  And , its always cool in the basement.  Am I right?

Jrod,

I wondered about the repeated camera mistakes. I watched FFN at home and assumed it was the camera crew’s fault. Everyone makes mistakes. It didn’t bother me really.

Glad to see Pickerington Central HS did so well. Very partial to them as I graduated from there.

Looking forward to a good season of Football Friday Nite!
