Deep Thoughts

Keepin’ Tabs on the Crew: Are you listening?

They call themselves “America’s Hardest Working Team” and it’s hard to argue with them.  From obscurity last season to the best record in the MLS this season, the Crew has been rebuilt with smarts and finesse.

Question is, have you noticed?  Attendance is still lacking, except for the Crew diehards.  Just wondering out loud if the casual sports fan would get hooked on the Crew.  Ultimately, it’s soccer.  In America, it’s still a second-tier sport at best. We pay attention for the World Cup and the occasional major tournament (UEFA Champions League, etc...).

Here’s the thing---my sport growing up was, and remains today, track and field.  In America, NOBODY cares about track until the Olympic games every four years. To me, a major track meet like the Jesse Owens Invitational at OSU is a big event.  Most people don’t even know what it is.

I just wonder if the Crew continues to dictate the tempo of games and stays at the head of the MLS, will people support it?  It’s easy to say from your couch, but just what does the team have to do to move fans to action (i.e.--get them in the stadium)?

I can honestly say the Crew will demand more air time from us with their continued success, and here’s hoping that leads to more public interest. I guess this will test the theory that everybody loves a winner.
