Memorial: Tiger Triumphs
I guess I’m never surprised by what I see from Tiger anymore. He’s hit some incredible shots in his career, but he always seems to do it when the pressure’s at its peak.
For example, Sunday at Muirfield.
I’ve never had a chance to see Tiger in contention on Sunday before in person. Now I can confirm, it’s incredible. The crowds following Tiger Sunday were simply massive—a sea of people following his every step and shot, always respectful—almost in awe of his celebrity. And he rewarded their devotion.
He hit a 60 foot putt for birdie on 2. He chipped in for an eagle from the rough on 11—an eruption that could be heard strong throughout the course. He birdied 17 to take the lead, then hit an incredible 187-yard approach shot into 18 that stuck about 9-inches from the cup. The noise from the massive crowd was overwhelming.
I think Tiger is the best example we have right now of an athlete of whom greatness is always expected, and he seemingly always delivers. And he does it against steadily improving competition on multiple courses around the world.
I talked to him on 18 green after the tournament, shook his hand and complimented his buckeye colors he wore Sunday. I guess no one had pointed that out to him during the day because he seemed impressed with himself for appealing to the locals.
And the best news… I don’t think we have to worry whether Tiger will return next year.
