NBC’s Trip to Ann Arbor! The Inside Story…
Hatred runs south to north…at least in Ohio. As an Ohio resident over the past 4 years I’ve grown to understand this passion Ohio State fans feel. Over time, these emotions have poured over me from the thousands of fans and players and coaches I’ve met. And after visiting the Big House Saturday, and I can now proudly announce… I THINK I HATE MICHIGAN, TOO!
But, to be fair, my reasons are different than yours. Michigan Stadium is the largest on-campus stadium in America. Nearly 112-thousand fans watched this year’s OSU-Michigan game in person. And you know what impresses me about Michigan Stadium… Nothing.
Our weekend anchor, Marcus Thorpe, did a piece Saturday during the game about the amount of noise fans in the Big House make. He took along a decibel monitor to make his point. Turns out, the Big House at its loudest is comparable to a blender in your kitchen. At no point does the noise become even uncomfortable.
And then, there’s the press box. It’s the WORST press box in the galaxy! It’s incredibly cramped with poor access and sight lines (and the press box meal? Hot dogs and pretzels!) and by the looks of it, you need a tetanus shot upon exit. Thankfully, the good folks at UM are renovating their facilities this year.
But my dislike for Michigan pales in comparison to the level of hate spewed by our own Mindy Drayer. I’m including some photos of our work on the trip to Ann Arbor, featuring Mindy’s “Beat… Mich… Again” signs she proudly displayed in the front window of our NBC 4 Satellite Truck. Unfortunately, the truck was parked INSIDE the stadium gates! Somehow, no one decided to slash our tires.
And don’t sit next to Mindy during ANY Buckeye game, in particular the OSU v Michigan game! She will break your ribs trying not to scream out in a crowded press box. This is also what’s great about Mindy---her passion for OSU is unmatched—it’s real! We need more people like Drayer in the world.
Also, thanks to the Michigan student who pressed his bare buttocks against one of news cars Saturday. We’ll never wash it again (the car, that is).
Our NBC 4 team enjoyed its trip up north---although, Woody would be ticked off at us. We did buy gas there. But we didn’t want to. Anywho, enjoy the photos.
