Omar And C.C. go way back…
I’m a sports junkie, what can I say? If there’s a chance to go to a game, I go. Pro, minor league, college, high school, little league – you get the point…
Reminds me of a game I went to nine years ago. Game 1 of the Sac-Joaquin section baseball finals at Billy Hebert field in Stockton, Ca.
I was there partly to support McClatchy High School, a team loaded with guys I played with and against in little league and beyond. But I was there mainly to see the big three-sport phenom from Vallejo High School. A left handed slugger whom experts predicted would make it at the professional level not with his bat, but with his arm.
His name, Carsten Charles Sabathia. Known then, as he’s known now, simply as C.C.
So here we are again. C.C. on the field, me in the stands (Auxillary press seating is in the outfield). 1998 now 2007. High school sectional playoffs now Major League Baseball playoffs. Hebert Field now Jacobs Field. C.C. the Apache now C.C. the Indian.
He’s no longer a first baseman in Game 1, he’s the starting pitcher against the New York Yankees in game 1 of the A.L.D.S.
We’ve come a long way (Did I say we? Extra large coattails folks), and for Indians fans let’s hope this postseason ride is just beginning. See you later! Omar
