Deep Thoughts

Rating the Rating Mags… Who’s got it right?

How’s this for dissention… Athlon Sports ranks Florida #1 this preseason, with OSU #2 and Georgia 5th.

Lontime analyst Phil Steele also says Florida’s #1, OSU 2nd and Georgia 9th.

Sporting News like Georgia, with Ohio State 2nd… Florida ranks 9th in their poll.

Glad we cleared all that up.

Pick up a different presason mag and you’ll read a different reality about college football.  In fact, the disparity between mags is so great that now there’s a website devoted to ranking all the rankings.

This may be a sign of the apoocolypse, but it’s true.  Just to repeat, a guy ranks the rankings with his own rankings.  Does anyone still play games anymore?

That’s your website to go so far inside the numbers you’ll never get out alive.  This guy (Strassen, i guess) has compiled a scoring system taking into account 8 well known preseason rankings. Right now, Ohio State ranks on the site as the nation’s #1 team, mainly based on their consistency through the rankings.  No one ranks OSU below #3 in its poll, but none of the polls rank OSU #1. And Georgia and Florida, the presumed big two of the SEC this year, rank no higher than 4th and 5th respectively.

If the Strassen rankings hold true, come September 13th we’ll see a matchup of the nation’s best two teams, Ohio State and USC.

So if you can’t wait for reality Aug. 30th, just create your own.  Buying it off the magazine aisle gets expensive after awhile.
