Real Men Wear Pink
I ran with my closest 46,000 friends Saturday. I ran because my mother had a breast cancer concern, and because i know of dozens of women in my family and life who’ve suffered with breast cancer. I’m sick of women getting sick with this—-and I’m not alone.
At the Komen Race for the Cure, we raised nearly $2 million for breast cancer research. I believe I heard the statistic as 1 in 8 women will fight some form of the disease in their lifetimes. Cancer in general is incredibly out of control, but breast cancer is one of the most common forms.
It’s a cause so close to so many people because breast cancer doesn’t care how famous or rich or how good a person you are. I was thinking about this when I heard about Phil Mickelson’s wife, Amy, being diagnosed this week. She’s a beautiful, vibrant girl with 3 adorable kids and a multi-millionaire husband. She’ll of course receive the best imaginable medical care that can be found, but her diagnosis is just another reminder that cancer can strike anyone, young or old.
I know we can’t cure every disease—-(believe me, as a father of a child with autism and the potential for a 2nd child diagnosed, i know that frustration) but 46,000 people in downtown Columbus and millions more who fight everyday around the world agree, this is a disease we must defeat now. It’s good to see so many athletes getting involved in “thinking pink” and helping raise awareness.
