Deep Thoughts

Seattle Trip Talk

So I’m in Seattle Friday, and here’s what I see at the famous Pike’s Place Market: a dude playing harmonica balancing a guitar on his chin while twirling a hula hoop in the middle of the street.  Welcome to Seattle.

It’s a very liberal, very cloudy town.  And this past weekend it was packed with Buckeyes—some 10,000 found their way there, but not all from Ohio.  We ran into a group from Vegas, a lady who flew from Baltimore (coast-to-coast), etc… and why would they come this far for a 3 hour football game?  Insanity: maybe.  Dedication: for sure.  But mostly: curiosity.

Seattle is not a college football town, but the UW campus and Husky Stadium have to be seen!  I spent time Saturday morning out on Lake Washington with a buddy of mine from back in West Virginia on one of the many boats that come to the stadium. That’s right—“boatgaiting!” The combination of beer and boat fumes brings out the finest in a Husky fan.  In all seriousness it’s a beautiful scene, and it’s incredible fun for Husky lovers.

Husky Stadium is as advertised—LOUD!  Not ear shattering, but certainly among west coast stadiums it has to be considered as loud as you’ll find—mostly because of the stadium’s construction.  Nearly 70% of the fans sit between the 15 yard lines.  Sure, some of those fans might need a satellite dish to see the game, but they’re there. And the roof on the building traps all the sound in the stadium.  Not like Michigan Stadium where all the sound escapes (not that they have much to cheer about anyway).

If you ever get the chance, give Seattle a couple of days.  As for football, gameday in Columbus is still unbeatable. Except, of course, for gameday at Marshall.  I kid because we’re 0-3 and I need to laugh.

PEACE
JROD
