Signing Day Angst? Not so fast…
Yep. Jordan Hicks is going to Texas. And yep x 2. Latwan Anderson will probably go to WVU. And yep to the 3rd degree. Matt James will probably go to Notre Dame.
Worried? Not here.
First of all, when OSU gets all its faxes tomorrow from high school recruits, do not be surprised if one the commitments changes their mind at the last minute and signs elsewhere—-it seems to happen every year at most schools. This year, I’d bet WR James Louis is the guy. He’s been waffling about following teammates to Minnesota and Virginia Tech in the past two weeks—-not sounding like a diehard Buckeye.
Jim Tressel says he’ll take 20 guys (maybe give or take 1) and if they don’t get Seantrel Henderson or James Wednesday, he might just pocket those schollies for 2011. Expect OSU to put together a monster class next year similar to the 2009 class.
And BTW—the guys who actually are signing tomorrow can play. Christian Bryant is an exciting player just from a versatility standpoint—he can play so many spots—very Jermale Hines-ish. Not that OSU needs another running back, but watching tape of Roderick Smith makes me think he can come into camp and at least make the competition entertaining. And just from the “eyes test” Solon’s Darryl Baldwin looks like a player. WR Tyrone Williams from Cleveland looks Randy Moss-ish on tape because everything looks easy for him.
And the list goes on. Don’t get blinded by the ESPNU or CBS College Sports broadcasts Wednesday sending kid after kid to Notre Dame, Florida, USC, Texas and Alabama. “5-star” guys sound great, but it’s their projection to college football that makes the real difference.
Recent OSU 3-star recruits include AJ Hawk, Malcolm Jenkins and James Laurinaitis. They turned out ok.
And OSU got a huge start on the 2011 class this past weekend at junior day. Don’t be surprised if the next OSU class gets back to the top 5 in terms of rankings.
Oh, and don’t forget. COACHES COACH UP TALENT!! That’s their job, and at OSU they’ve done it rather well for a long time. The Bucks will start 2010 likely as the #2 team in the country, which makes one recruiting class much less important.
