4:30 News with a Side of Burnt Toast
I don’t work a regular 9 to 5. You might not either. My day starts at Oh-Dark-Thirty where I light my path to the shower with the LCD on my cell phone, I muffle the sounds of my cabinet drawers shutting, and open the garage door crossing my fingers and hoping that I don’t wake the dogs-the husband-the next door neighbors.
My day is now starting at around 2:45 a.m. for a little something called a 4:30 newscast. NBC 4 Today is the first local newscast to go on the air early because we know you have a lot to do and both insomniacs and those list-makers alike need good information at that hour! Mike Jackson or I will be coming at you live from our newsroom set where our producers have been monitoring fresh information overnight. Bob Nunnally will be in every day with your weather needs, too. Then… the entire team (including the illustrious Miss Monica Day) will resume our regular schedule for the 5 to 7 a.m. hours.
Believe me, I know how much effort it takes to get up and moving at that time.
And today I had a morning that took a LOT of effort.
I woke up to make a piece of toast. Simple Italian bread, light butter, put it into my Cuisinart. Something to chase the grumbling stomach away when you need to go on air and chat with all of you so early in the morning. In my best effort to toast bread, a little puff of smoke (okay, maybe more) escaped into my kitchen. And I probably don’t have to tell you what happened next. Smoke Alarm. My husband scrambling out of bed and yelling “HELLO?!?” as he tried to rescue our dogs.
Oops.
On my way to work I tried the second breakfast option, some kind of soy bar that packed easily and got me out of the house quickly. I backed out of the drive, out of our subdivision, and turned on my high beams to navigate down some more rural roads. I didn’t know this would be a day when I encountered The Motorcycle Man and I would consequently irritate him, unintentionally.
The Motorcycle Man is a mysterious figure that rides his motorcycle with a sidecar in the opposite direction of my path during the early mornings. I’m not talking about a Goldwing. Think more Indiana Jones. And I believe he wears driving goggles. But I could be hallucinating.
It doesn’t happen every morning. But his appearance also isn’t dependent on the weather either. Motorcycle Man was riding in a flurry of flurries a few weeks ago. This particular morning, I was eating my soy bar-deciding that I didn’t like it-and forgot to turn off my brights. Motorcycle Man proceeded to flash his at me several times.
Oops. Totally understand and I’m sorry.
So, I’m here. I made it to work. I’ve read through my scripts, checked all my email-Facebook-Twitter accounts, and looked up extra information on the devastation in Haiti. Such an awful story. But I’m hoping you tune in at 4:30 because maybe you can help this devastated nation in some way AND we can also help each other get through the day.
That’s what this blog will be about… it’s not just a wake up call for our morning. We’ll talk about things in life that give us a jolt, teach us something new, and maybe even change our perspective.
So… until we meet here again, before the sun comes up… make it a great day!
