Weather Watchers

Weekend Variety

Big snowstorm passes south of central Ohio, while northern Ohio is frigidly cold.
Thinking ice fishing will resume with caution in Ohio this weekend.
I always take a hammer and nail that is more than 4” long before going out on ice.
Nail into the ice - if no water comes up the hole then ice is more than 4” thick. Safe ice.
If you are out on ice, in Minnesota and Wisconsin up north we advise wearing two ice picks around the neck connected by a cord like the old mittens we had as kids so we would not lose them.  If you break through, ice picks give you the ability to climb out of the hole.  Broken through ice and water on ice is very slippery and impossible to climb on without the picks.

When I was a 12 or 13,our family used to ice skate on Buckeye Lake after the motorcycles racea.  One year my dad fell through the ice along with my younger brother. My brother caught himself on the edge and only went in waist deep. The ice kept breaking when dad tried to get out.  Lucky for him he landed on one of the floating bogs and finally got out. I was closer to shore watching and yelling,it scared me pretty bad.
