Did the governor take a pay cut?
George and Judy Asked:
Did Governor Strickland take a ten-day pay leave, we would like to know if all (or any) exempt employees of the State of Ohio are taking an equivalent loss of pay. Wouldn’t it be an even greater benefit to the state budget if all State of Ohio employees were to take an equivalent cut?
We Found:
We spoke to Amanda Wurst, from the Governor’s office, she says the governor has declined two pay raises the past two years and continues to pay for his own health care and food at the governor’s residence, which has not been done by previous governors.
Most of the governor’s staff has not had a pay raise since the beginning of the administration, with the exception being staff members that made between $30,000-$32,000.
The final collective bargaining agreement for the next biennium will require 10 unpaid furlough days and pay freezes for all bargaining-unit state employees. The governor intends the terms of that agreement to apply to all non-bargaining unit state employees, including the governor’s staff, as well.
